The Iceman

When I watched the movie “Mud”, I was looking for this acting level, this signature performance, from Michael Shannon, but he didn’t have it because of the roll that he got does not allowed it. I was happy because in this movie he had the same signature performance from Boardwalk Empire, this was exactly what I was looking for.
The first positive point goes to the fact that this movie is based on true events. It’s a movie about a hitman who works, mainly, to the Italian mafia – another positive points because these are themes that pleased me.
All the movie together with the final observations make us aware of who was Richard Kuklinski, not just what he done, but, also, his personality. The whole character profile matches with the image I have of this actor, which is based on his performance in the tv show I mentioned before. He shows a kind of “autism”, an abstention of feelings for most people but, at the same time, he is aware of his personality and, thereby, “shape” it to have some affection for something/somebody. I say “shape” because it’s not inborn to him – the affection, the feelings in general -, he almost force himself to have affection, at least for me it’s what I deduce. Could be because it’s acceptable for most people or everyone needs a meaning to walk in this world when the capacity of thinking logically is still minimally intact? This is something I can’t give a factual answer.
We have the presence of great actors (Winona Ryder, Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, James Franco, John Ventimiglia, …) who give us brilliant characters. Together with the good story that I already mentioned, I think it’s the perfect combination to have a good movie. I was not expecting so much, it was a good surprise.

Quando vi o filme “Mud”, estava à procura deste nível de actuação, deste registo, por parte de Michael Shannon, mas não o teve por o papel atribuído não o permitir. Fiquei contente por neste filme ele ter o mesmo registo que em Boardwalk Empire, era mesmo isto que eu procurava.
O primeiro ponto positivo vai logo para o facto deste filme se basear numa história verídica. Um filme acerca de um assassino a soldo que trabalha, maioritariamente, para a máfia italiana – mais pontos positivos visto serem temas que me interessam.
Todo o filme conjugado com as notas finais faz com que fiquemos a par de quem foi Richard Kuklinski, não apenas o que fez mas, também, a sua personalidade. Todo o perfil da personagem a interpretar vai de acordo à imagem que tenho deste actor, a qual provém da sua prestação na série referida acima. Ele demonstra um certo “autismo”, uma abstenção de sentimentos com a maioria das pessoas mas, ao mesmo tempo, consegue ter noção da sua personalidade e, assim, “limá-la” para que tenha afeição por algo/alguém. Digo “limar” porque não é algo que lhe seja inato – a afeição, os sentimentos no geral -, quase que se obriga ter afeição, pelo menos para mim isto é o que transparece. Será por ser o que é comummente aceitável ou porque toda a gente precisa de um significado para andar no mundo quando a capacidade de pensar logicamente ainda se mantém minimamente intacta? A isto não posso responder concretamente.
Contamos com a presença de grandes actores (Winona Ryder, Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, James Franco, John Ventimiglia, …) que nos trazem personagens muito boas. Juntamente com a boa história de que já falei, penso ser a conjugação perfeita para se ter um bom filme. Não estava à espera de tanto, foi uma boa surpresa.
Lo Imposible (The Impossible)

To do not distune, I kept my watch in the movies based on true stories and I just do not let down the level. The theme is totally different from before, here we are dealing with the disaster that occurred in Asia during the Tsunami in 2004. It followed the story of a family that survives this disaster. This is another movie that grabs because of the tension created, being this one directly linked to the dismay of all those affected by this disaster. Families lost, separated, dead… We are facing a scenario of total chaos, prone to shocking images that reveal the raw reality of such situations. Visually, it’s very well explored, since the material destruction (buildings, transportation and infrastructure), to the mental destruction of people. We should be grateful to the union created and the strength of all who deigned to help the needy.
Within the family which this movie focuses, we can see many of these examples, only through its five members.
As in the previous movie, the tension created makes us cling to the movie so that, I did not regard the time passing because of the “suffering by sympathy”. It is to warn that, as in the movie 127 Hours, this one also contains some very shocking images.

Para não destoar, mantive-me nos filmes baseados em histórias verídicas e acabei por não baixar a fasquia. O tema é totalmente diferente do anterior, aqui estamos perante o desastre que se deu na Ásia, aquando do Tsunami no ano de 2004. É acompanhada a história de uma família que sobrevive a este desastre. Este é mais um filme que agarra pela tensão criada, estando esta directamente ligada ao desespero de todos os afectados por este desastre. Famílias perdidas, separadas, mortas… Estamos perante um cenário de caos total, propício a imagens chocantes que nos revelam a realidade nua e crua deste tipo de situações. Visualmente muito bem explorado, desde a destruição material (edifícios, meios de transporte e infra-estruturas) à destruição mental das pessoas. É de dar graças à união criada e à força de todos os que se dignaram a ajudar os necessitados.
Dentro da família sobre a qual se debruça este filme, conseguimos assistir a muitos destes exemplos, apenas através dos seus 5 membros.
Tal como no filme anterior, a tensão criada faz com que nos agarremos ao filme de tal forma, que não dei pelo tempo passar tal foi o “sofrimento por simpatia”. É de avisar que, tal como no filme 127 Hours, este também contém algumas imagens muito chocantes.
The Basketball Diaries

This movie has much to say about, especially good (or mostly).
We can start with the all-star cast: Leonardo DiCaprio (only his 5th movie and already reveals much of his talent), Mark Wahlberg, three actors from the great tv-show “The Sopranos” (Lorraine Bracco, Vincent Pastore, Michael Imperioli) and, as I could not fail to mention Juliette Lewis (another role with its so characteristic features of lunatic, weird, kind of crazy). This cast grabs anyone.
The theme of this movie is a topic that interests me greatly at a cinematographic level, the world of drugs. There is much to explore in this topic and, this movie, explores a little of everything from social problems, as well as personal, through the “evolution” in the type of drugs consumed, the decay of mind and body, the recovery, relapse, between other issues that this addiction usually trigger. The fact of not specifically focus on one of these stages can take off some “strength” comparing to other movies (like “Requiem for a Dream”, for example), but is offset by how they explore all phases competently, bringing us great shots (there are some plans from recovery to highlight) and excellent performances.
The fact that it’s a movie based on a true story increases the impact that it has. The main character is very interesting, because despite all the bad choices that he does, he do not give up from what gives him more pleasure, write his diary, which brings us good moments of narrative.
Regarding the scenario, nothing better than the dirty neighborhoods of New York to develop a story about drugs and young offenders. We are faced with the typical scenario of the dirty old Brooklyn, conducive to this type of environments and stories, unfortunately.
Summarizing, great performances, with a very interesting story, well built. Passes an important message. Very well done. Highly recommended!

Este filme tem muito que se lhe diga, de bom principalmente (ou maioritariamente).
Podemos começar pelo elenco de luxo: Leonardo DiCaprio (é apenas o seu 5º filme e já revela muito do seu talento), Mark Wahlberg, três actores da grande série “The Sopranos” (Lorraine Bracco, Vincent Pastore, Michael Imperioli) e, como não poderia deixar de referir Juliette Lewis (mais um papel com os seus traços tão característicos de aluada, estranha, meio maluca). Este elenco agarra qualquer um.
O tema deste filme é um tema que me interessa muito a nível cinematográfico, o mundo das drogas. Há muito que explorar neste tema e, este filme, explora um pouco de tudo desde os problemas sociais, bem como os pessoais, passando pela “evolução” no tipo de drogas usadas, a decadência da mente e corpo, a recuperação, recaída, entre outros problemas que este vício costuma despoletar. O facto de não se focar especificamente numa destas fases pode-lhe tirar alguma “força” comparando com outros filmes (como o “Requiem for a Dream”, por exemplo), mas é compensado pela forma como exploram todas as fases com competência, trazendo-nos grandes planos (há que realçar alguns planos da recuperação) e excelentes actuações.
O facto de ser um filme baseado numa história verídica aumenta o impacto que este tem. A personagem principal é muito interessante, pois apesar de todas as más escolhas que faz não desiste do que lhe dá mais prazer, escrever o seu diário, o qual nos traz bons momentos de narrativa.
Em relação ao cenário, nada melhor que os bairros sujos de Nova Iorque para se desenvolver uma história sobre drogas e jovens delinquentes. Estamos perante o típico cenário do velho e sujo Brooklyn, propício a este tipo de ambientes e histórias, infelizmente.
Em suma, grande representações, com uma história muito interessante, bem construída. Passa uma mensagem importante. Muito bem conseguido. Altamente recomendado!
Eat Pray Love

Again I was a little reluctant to see a Romance but early I saw that this would not be such a banal novel, at least until halfway. The fact of having intelligent jokes and a script out of the ordinary – starting with two very good comparisons that had never heard -, made me create higher expectations. The part of the movie that is set in Rome still pleased me more and was the one I liked the most in the movie, from the stage to the action itself. The photography of the following scenario – Pray -, but mostly the latter – Love -, also pleased me. As the movie did not introduce me too long “depression” moments (something that bothers me in this kind of movies), I was a bit disappointed with the last part of the movie where they appeared. But what would be a movie like this without these parts? (Maybe something better…).
In short, for what I was expecting before I watch the movie, it had really good moments. The whole was eventually interesting.

Mais uma vez fiquei um pouco reticente em ver um Romance mas logo de início vi que este não seria um desses romances banais, pelo menos até meio. O facto de ter piadas inteligentes e de ter um guião fora do habitual – começando com duas comparações muito boas que nunca tinha ouvido -, fez com que criasse expectativas mais altas. A parte do filme que tem como cenário base Roma ainda me agradou mais e foi a que gostei mais no filme, desde o cenário até à acção em si. A fotografia do cenário seguinte – Pray -, mas principalmente do último – Love -, também me agradou. Como o filme não me apresentou momentos de “depressão” muito prolongados (algo que me chateia neste tipo de filmes), fiquei um pouco desiludido com a última parte do filme onde estes apareceram. Mas o que seria um filme destes sem estas partes? (Talvez algo melhor…).
Resumindo, para o que estava a espera antes de ver o filme, teve momentos mesmo muito bons. O todo acabou por ser interessante.
The Cabin in the Woods

This movie has a basic concept that has been explored in several movies. In this particular case I even found it funny when I realized that they were using it because I was not waiting for it in this movie. I think the script is weak and the plot on which the movie turns around is even weaker. A positive point, to try to save this movie that caught my attention when I saw the trailer, are some of the things that are within the cubes (I do not want spoiler), there are a few very funny.
P.S.: Now I realized why I was fooled by the trailer, it won the Golden Trailer Awards.

Este filme tem um conceito base que já foi explorado em vários filmes. Neste caso específico até achei engraçado quando percebi que o estavam a usar pois não estava à espera para este filme. Penso que o guião é fraco e que a trama sobre a qual gira o filme é ainda mais fraca. Um ponto positivo, para tentar salvar este filme que me chamou a atenção quando vi o trailer, são algumas das coisas que se encontram dentro dos cubos (não quero fazer spoiler), há umas quantas muito engraçadas.
P.S.: Agora percebi porque é que fui enganado pelo trailer. O filme Ganhou o Golden Trailer Awards.
Upside Down

I watched this movie for its different concept, two worlds in opposite poles, separated by their own laws of gravity and its socio-economic differences. In terms of special effects I liked. They give us funny details, with original ideas that derive from the invented laws of gravity. In relation to the main story it didn’t fulfill my expectations. A love story that it it’s not spent in a so strange world could be called normal, because it follows all the rules of tension from the “banal novels”. For a so interesting idea they could have used a completely different story, something as strange as the world they invented.

Vi este filme pelo seu conceito diferente, dois mundos em pólos opostos, separados pelas suas próprias leis da gravidade e pelas suas diferenças sócio-económicas. Em termos de efeitos especiais gostei. Dão-nos pormenores engraçados, com ideias originais que derivam das leis da gravidade inventadas. Em relação à história principal esta deixou muito a desejar. Uma história de amor que se não se passasse num mundo tão estranho poderia ser chamada de normal, pois segue todas as regras de tensão dos “romances banais”. Para uma ideia tão interessante poderiam ter utilizado uma história completamente diferente, algo tão estranho quanto o mundo que inventaram.

It was told to me that this would be a difficult movie to understand but the only difficult thing is to identify the different characters that the same actors represent throughout the various stories.
The moral of the movie can be removed from more or less 5 phrases that appear in the final third of the movie, spoken by various characters. In my opinion, the sentence that summarizes the movie is from the Edwig’s father in law, something like that is not worth having heroic deeds because we will not change anything. Or is it worth? (Let us leave the question in the air…) You can always extrapolate this idea to many areas of life, in all epochs, as the film demonstrates so well.
I retained an interesting idea watching this movie: we only should break conventions (everything is pre-set as correct in society, lets say) if we have the notion that we are doing it and what we are doing.
It is worth noting the all-star cast (great representations), special effects (most exploited in some of the worlds, obviously) and the photograph at some times (certain scenes in the forest and other at sea, for example).

Tinham me dito que este seria um filme difícil de compreender mas a única coisa difícil de identificar são as diferentes personagens que os mesmos actores representam ao longo das várias histórias.
A moral do filme pode-se retirar de umas 5 frases que aparecem no terço final do filme, ditas por várias personagens. Na minha opinião, a frase que resume o filme é a do sogro do Edwig, algo do género de que não vale a pena termos actos heróicos porque não mudamos nada. Ou será que vale? (Deixemos a pergunta no ar…) Pode-se sempre extrapolar esta ideia para muitos campos da vida, em todas as épocas, como o filme demonstra tão bem.
Retive uma ideia interessante ao ver este filme: só se devem quebrar as convenções (tudo o que está pré-definido como correcto na sociedade, diga-se) se tivermos noção que o estamos a fazer e do que estamos a fazer.
É de salientar o elenco de luxo (grandes representações) , os efeitos especiais (mais explorados em alguns dos mundos, obviamente) e a fotografia em alguns momentos (certas cenas na floresta e outras no mar, por exemplo).
Muito bom! Altamente recomendado!

Expectations were that many more for this movie. The subject interests me greatly, the epoch also and the actors promise. It was very difficult to join this and have something I hated. It was a movie that entertained me a lot and I liked the story of this invincible family, skimming the fantastic. It has enough comedy and of good quality. The love stories have not become boring and help the movie to flow. With so many accolades I do not know what this movie does not have to make me thought that it’s not phenomenal. It sometimes happens this situation of thinking that is something missing but I’m not sure what. The easier it is to call it master touch because I think I was waiting for something out of the ordinary to put this movie at a level that I idealized.

As expectativas eram mais que muitas para este filme. O tema interessa-me bastante, a época também e os actores prometem. Era muito difícil esta junção dar algo que eu odiasse. Foi um filme que me entreteu muito e gostei da história desta família invencível, roçando o fantástico. Tem comédia quanto baste e de boa qualidade. As histórias de amor não se tornaram entediantes e ajudam o filme a fluir. Com tantos elogios não sei o que não tem este filme para que eu não o achasse fenomenal. Acontece por vezes esta situação de achar que faltou qualquer coisa mas não sei bem o quê. O mais fácil será chamar-lhe toque de mestre pois acho que estava à espera de algo fora do comum para que este filme estivesse no patamar que idealizei.
End of Watch

When I saw the trailer I was eager to watch it. It seemed to me a good action movie (with good actors) and without those exaggerations of Hollywood. After all it had some exaggerations(especially in shootouts) but it kept the idea of the good actors. The story is interesting but it’s very superficially explored, as regards to the new mafia that wants to control those streets. Turns out to be a “handing camera” with an action undeveloped. This technique gives it an interesting touch because, as I have been saying, I like when it’s used for making movies more realistic, which I think is the goal of this movie. I understand that the purpose of this movie is to sensitize us to the day-to-day of street cops but it didn’t “touch” me enough.

Quando vi o trailer fiquei com vontade de o ver. Pareceu-me um bom filme de acção (com bons actores) e sem aqueles exageros de Hollywood. Acabou por ter alguns exageros (especialmente em tiroteios) mas manteve-se a ideia dos bons actores. A história até é interessante mas é explorada muito superficialmente, no que toca à nova máfia que quer controlar aquelas ruas. Acaba por ser um “câmara à mão” com uma acção pouco desenvolvida. Esta técnica dá-lhe um toque interessante pois, como já tenho vindo a dizer, gosto que a utilizem por tornar os filmes mais realistas, o que penso ser o objectivo deste filme. Compreendo que o objectivo deste filme é sensibilizar-nos para o dia-à-dia dos polícias de rua mas não me “tocou” o suficiente.
Matchstick Men

Compared with the movie that I analyzed before, the course also earns a lot from this phenomenal performance of Nicolas Cage and also this is due in part to their tics. This movie is very good for those who like scams, they are the aces in this branch. I think I can easily summarize this movie with the following sentence: “Catch me if you can” meets “The Game”.

Em comparação com o filme que analisei anteriormente, também o desenrolar deste ganha muito com a actuação fenomenal do Nicolas Cage e, também esta se deve em parte aos seus tiques. Este filme é muito bom para quem gosta de vigarices, eles são os ases neste ramo. Acho que consigo resumir este filme facilmente com a seguinte frase: “Catch me if you can” meets “The Game”.
