Sometimes we’re lucky and watch, completely unaware, a movie above average.
This movie portrays the growing of the addiction of the professor Germain (Fabrice Luchini) for the writing of his student, Claude (Ernst Umhauer). Everything begins with a simple homework – a text describing the weekend – which ends up becoming a foisted delivery of texts, which are received in a voluntary/obligatory/desiring/afraid way (among many other feelings) by Germain, together with his wife who also becomes addicted to this story told by Claude – the experiences in the home of his friend Rafa, firstborn of Rafa and Esther, evolving and adapting his writing skills according with both his professor’s tips as well as with the way he wants the professor (and the other) to react.
This movies’ concept is fascinating, skimming softly the madness, eccentric! Claude is a very strong character that controls the entire movie through the manipulation of the other characters, with an ease and ingenuity that elevates him to the personification of the “master touch”; in other words, his character it’s the axe in which the action turns around. It reveals that we can achieve everything through an astute manipulation, which is a matter of dedication and objectivity (a lot of dedication in the development of this capacity, if it’s not innate). If it’s used to do good, it should not be seen as something with a bad intent, taking into account that the word has a strong negative connotation, because its definition presupposes that it’s “usually used for it’s own benefit”.
An interesting fact is the presentation of a type of art based in the description of a painting through audio, while we observe an empty canvas being painted with our own imagination. I had already thought about something similar, which proves that it’s very difficult to create something totally original but it’s possible to create something like this movie, amazingly well done.
I became fascinated with the end of the movie, any other end would be unreasonable regarding this option. Something that made me wish to be present at that place with a notebook and a pen.

De vez em quando temos sorte e vemos, sem querer, um filme acima da média.
Este filme retrata o evoluir da dependência do professor Germain (Fabrice Luchini) pela escrita do seu aluno, Claude (Ernst Umhauer). Tudo começa com um simples trabalho de casa – um texto a descrever o fim-de-semana – que acaba por se tornar num impingir de textos, que são recebidos de forma voluntária/obrigatória/desejosa/receosa (entre tantos outros sentimentos) por Germain, juntamente com a sua esposa que acaba por se viciar nesta história que Claude conta – as experiências na casa do seu recente amigo Rafa, primogénito de Rafa e Esther, evoluindo e adaptando a sua escrita de acordo com as dicas que o professor lhe dá e a forma como quer que este (e outros) reaja(m).
O conceito deste filme é algo fascinante, a roçar muito levemente a loucura, excêntrico. Claude é uma personagem muito forte que controla todo o filme através da manipulação das outras personagens, com uma facilidade e engenho que o eleva a personificar o “toque de mestre” deste filme, ou seja, a sua personagem é o eixo em torno do qual gira a acção. Revela que podemos conseguir tudo através de uma manipulação perspicaz, é uma questão de dedicação e objectividade (muita dedicação no desenvolvimento desta capacidade, caso não seja inata). Se usada para o bem não deve ser vista como algo de mau fundo, tendo em conta que a palavra tem toda uma conotação negativa, pois a sua própria definição pressupõe que é utilizada “geralmente em benefício próprio”.
Um ponto interessante foi terem apresentado um tipo de arte baseado na descrição de um quadro através de audio, enquanto observamos uma tela vazia, pintando com a nossa imaginação. Já tinha pensado em algo do género, o que comprova que muito dificilmente se inventa algo cem porcento original mas pode-se sempre criar algo como este filme, totalmente bem conseguido.
Fiquei fascinado com o final do filme, qualquer outro teria sido descabido existindo esta opção. Algo que me fez desejar estar presente naquele local com um bloco e uma caneta.
Trance

It’s undeniable that this movie has a great cast, Vicent Cassel, James McAvoy and Rosario Dawson who give strength tho the characters they play. The plot is presented to us like in the movie “Snatch”, with many people and the confusions they start to have, and all this around a stolen painting.
The story has an interesting concept, the hypnoses, and explores it almost in a supernatural way (towards the end). This fact disappointed me a little because I expected something more “down-to-earth”. I say supernatural because I’m a little skeptic about this subject, despite thinking that it’s an interesting topic. Apart from the exaggeration – in my opinion -, I liked the overturns in the relationships between the characters. The action alternates between reality and hypnoses and it’s easy to distinguish them. I think they could make a more intricate action to give something more to this movie to which I had big expectations.
So I can say that this movie ends wasting the talent of its actors, both because of its end and the lack of complexity in terms of plot/action typical of this kind of story.

Algo indiscutível em relação a este filme é que tem um grande elenco, Vicent Cassel, James McAvoy e Rosario Dawson dão força às personagens que interpretam. O enredo é-nos apresentado ao estilo do filme “Snatch”, com vários intervenientes e as confusões que se vão criando entre eles, tudo à volta de um quadro roubado.
A história tem um conceito interessante, a hipnose, e explora-a de uma forma quase sobrenatural (mais para o final). Isto desiludiu-me um pouco visto que estava à espera de algo mais “terra-a-terra”. Digo sobrenatural por ser um pouco céptico em relação a este assunto, não deixando de o achar interessante. À parte este exagero – na minha opinião -, achei interessante as reviravoltas que se dão a nível das relações entre as personagens. A acção vai-se alternando entre a realidade e a hipnose, não sendo difícil distingui-las. Penso que poderiam ter feito uma acção mais intrincada para dar um pouco mais a este filme para o qual eu tinha umas expectativas mais elevadas.
Posso então dizer que é um filme que acaba por desperdiçar o talento destes actores, um pouco pelo seu final bem como pela falta de complexidade no enredo/acção que este tipo de histórias pedem.
Stoker

One more piece of art from this Cinema King, Chan-wook Park.
The movie began dazzling me early through the excellent edition of credits, making these interact with the scenario/action. It’s excellent. From here was a succession of increasing fascination from the details of sound, to image. The fact that the sound be exponentiated, because India (Mia Wasikowska) have this “gift” of hearing more accurate than usual, makes us live action “through her ears”. Details like the sound of the spider walking and the eggshells being broked are simply brutal. Regarding the characters, we see three major representations of the main characters, all of them very peculiar and strange, much in the style that I like, great. The story and its plot have the intricate style of this director, focusing on family issues, as usual.
This movie is perfect for showing that cinema is an Art, beyond simple entertainment. I have to thank him for his excellent work.

Mais uma obra de arte deste Rei do cinema, Chan-wook Park.
O filme começou por me deslumbrar logo no início através da excelente edição dos créditos, fazendo com que estes interajam com o cenário/acção. Está excelente. A partir daqui, foi uma sucessão crescente de fascínio, desde os pormenores de som, aos de imagem. O facto do som estar exponenciado, pelo facto de India (Mia Wasikowska) ter esse “dom” de ouvir de formar mais apurada que o normal, faz com que vivamos a acção “aos ouvidos” dela. Detalhes como o som da aranha a andar e da casca dos ovos a partir são simplesmente brutais. Em relação às personagens, assistimos a três grandes representações das personagens principais, todas elas muito peculiares e estranhas, muito ao estilo que me agrada, excelente. A história e o enredo desta, têm o estilo intricado deste realizador, focando problemas familiares, como já é hábito seu.
Este filme é perfeito para mostrar que o cinema é uma Arte, além de simples entretenimento. Tenho que agradecer o seu excelente trabalho.
The Following
After seeing the first 2 episodes I can say that this series promises (now I already watched 4 episodes). Starting with the main actor, but mainly the concept that “basically”, revolves around a serial killer who intends to create a story based on events that arise through characters controlled by himself, following a plan designed meticulously, taking starring the character played by Kevin Bacon.
Given this concept, it seems to me something that could be explored in “just” a movie but they showed that they know what they are doing and that this story still has much to give (I hope that they do not ramble…).
Após ter visto os 2 primeiros episódios posso dizer que esta série promete (neste momento já vi 4 episódios). Começando pelo actor principal, mas, principalmente, o conceito que, “basicamente”, gira em torno de um serial killer que pretende criar uma história com base nos acontecimentos que surgem através de personagens controladas por si, seguindo um plano concebido meticulosamente, tendo como protagonista a personagem interpretada por Kevin Bacon.
Tendo em conta este conceito, parece-me algo que poderia ser explorado em “apenas” um filme mas já conseguiram mostrar que sabem o que estão a fazer e que esta história ainda tem muito para dar (espero que não se percam…).
American Horror Story
The 1st season brought a concept that interests me, spirits and curses. The ambience is good, has a good thriller, a good story and the construction of it is very good. Arrived to us the 2nd season with a heavier scenario and a new concept that I liked even more, a hospice and all its mysteries, with more terror than the previous season. The using of the same home as the setting (fully modified) was interesting, as well as the same actors, leaving us clinging to the story through the actors, in part.
I look forward to the 3rd season!
A 1ª temporada trouxe um conceito que me interessa, espíritos e maldições. O ambiente é bom, tem um bom suspense, uma boa história e a construção da mesma é muito boa. Chegou-nos a 2ª temporada com um cenário mais pesado e um novo conceito que gostei ainda mais, um hospício e todos os seus mistérios, com mais terror que a temporada anterior. O interessante foi utilizarem a mesma casa como cenário (totalmente modificada), bem como os mesmos actores, deixando-nos agarrados à história através dos actores, em parte.
Espero ansiosamente pela 3ª temporada!
The Cabin in the Woods

This movie has a basic concept that has been explored in several movies. In this particular case I even found it funny when I realized that they were using it because I was not waiting for it in this movie. I think the script is weak and the plot on which the movie turns around is even weaker. A positive point, to try to save this movie that caught my attention when I saw the trailer, are some of the things that are within the cubes (I do not want spoiler), there are a few very funny.
P.S.: Now I realized why I was fooled by the trailer, it won the Golden Trailer Awards.

Este filme tem um conceito base que já foi explorado em vários filmes. Neste caso específico até achei engraçado quando percebi que o estavam a usar pois não estava à espera para este filme. Penso que o guião é fraco e que a trama sobre a qual gira o filme é ainda mais fraca. Um ponto positivo, para tentar salvar este filme que me chamou a atenção quando vi o trailer, são algumas das coisas que se encontram dentro dos cubos (não quero fazer spoiler), há umas quantas muito engraçadas.
P.S.: Agora percebi porque é que fui enganado pelo trailer. O filme Ganhou o Golden Trailer Awards.

It was told to me that this would be a difficult movie to understand but the only difficult thing is to identify the different characters that the same actors represent throughout the various stories.
The moral of the movie can be removed from more or less 5 phrases that appear in the final third of the movie, spoken by various characters. In my opinion, the sentence that summarizes the movie is from the Edwig’s father in law, something like that is not worth having heroic deeds because we will not change anything. Or is it worth? (Let us leave the question in the air…) You can always extrapolate this idea to many areas of life, in all epochs, as the film demonstrates so well.
I retained an interesting idea watching this movie: we only should break conventions (everything is pre-set as correct in society, lets say) if we have the notion that we are doing it and what we are doing.
It is worth noting the all-star cast (great representations), special effects (most exploited in some of the worlds, obviously) and the photograph at some times (certain scenes in the forest and other at sea, for example).
Very good! Highly recommended!

Tinham me dito que este seria um filme difícil de compreender mas a única coisa difícil de identificar são as diferentes personagens que os mesmos actores representam ao longo das várias histórias.
A moral do filme pode-se retirar de umas 5 frases que aparecem no terço final do filme, ditas por várias personagens. Na minha opinião, a frase que resume o filme é a do sogro do Edwig, algo do género de que não vale a pena termos actos heróicos porque não mudamos nada. Ou será que vale? (Deixemos a pergunta no ar…) Pode-se sempre extrapolar esta ideia para muitos campos da vida, em todas as épocas, como o filme demonstra tão bem.
Retive uma ideia interessante ao ver este filme: só se devem quebrar as convenções (tudo o que está pré-definido como correcto na sociedade, diga-se) se tivermos noção que o estamos a fazer e do que estamos a fazer.
É de salientar o elenco de luxo (grandes representações) , os efeitos especiais (mais explorados em alguns dos mundos, obviamente) e a fotografia em alguns momentos (certas cenas na floresta e outras no mar, por exemplo).
Muito bom! Altamente recomendado!
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs)

The story is not hidded from us, we know who the characters are and their intentions. In this movie to live the mystery we have to do it through the characters who are always in doubt trying to figure out who is who. Obviously we are going to know everything through the course of action but we are never “cheated”. It has touches of master as the detail of Morse code. It’s a good thriller.
PS: This movie is the “original” in which Martin Scorsese relied on to direct “The Departed”.

Não nos é escondida a história, sabemos quem são as personagens e quais as suas intenções. Neste filme para vivermos o mistério temos que o fazer através das personagens que estão sempre na dúvida tentando desvendar quem é quem. Obviamente vamos sabendo tudo com o desenrolar da acção mas nunca somos “enganados”. Tem toques de mestre como o pormenor do código morse. É um policial de qualidade.
P.S.: Este filme é o “original” no qual Martin Scorsese se baseou para fazer o “The Departed”.

I watched this movie in HD because my expectation was centered on exploring photography in the fantastic world where much of the action unfolds in the movie. Regarding the movie’s story it’s a little weak, it has a funny idea but not so well done. Regarding the fantastic world it could be further explored, have a much better photography, although it’s not so bad. In terms of horror it has its touch, some good moments but not enough. In short, it was all for exploring better.

Vi este filme em HD porque a minha expectativa se centrava no explorar da fotografia no mundo fantástico onde se desenrola grande parte da acção do filme. Em relação à história do filme é um pouco fraca, tem uma ideia engraçadita mas pouco conseguida. Em relação ao mundo fantástico podia ser mais explorado, ter uma fotografia muito melhor, apesar de não ser péssimo. Em termos de terror tem o seu toque, alguns bons momentos mas não os suficientes. Resumindo, ficou tudo por explorar melhor.
Primal Fear

This movie was one of those that make me say: thank goodness that exists cinema and I love it more each time!
It’s hard to talk about everything but I will try to organize my critique for points:
– It starts very well because the music of Dulce Pontes it’s part of the soundtrack. The musicality of the chosen music fits perfectly in the moments in which it appears.
– Watch Edward Norton in his youth is, initially, amusing and, then, shocking. I say “shocking” in a positive way because with this movie we can prove that he is a star in his own right, for its qualities since he’s a boy. The great role that he plays in this film is, together with the script, which makes this movie a masterpiece. I do not know which one contributes more.
– I definitely have to explore the filmography of Richard Gere because my opinion about him was not at this level. Plays a big role in this movie, very good!
– Overall all the actors are good, a serious “old fashion” movie.
– Usually I do not have much patience for the typical “courts movies” but we do not get tired with many court moments in this one. Only the essential and with a quality level of dialogue that makes me believe that, even if these scenes were longer, I would not get tired of watching them.
– The story, the story… I have to admit that it even has a basic foundation, we already have seen a lot of the genre in terms of main plot, but I leave the question: does the film revolves around the main story?

Este filme foi um daqueles que me fazem dizer: ainda bem que existe cinema e cada vez o adoro mais!
É difícil falar de tudo mas vou tentar organizar a minha crítica por pontos:
– Começa muito bem por a música da Dulce Pontes fazer parte da banda sonora. A musicalidade da música escolhida encaixa perfeitamente nos momentos em que aparece.
– Ver Edward Norton em jovem é, inicialmente, engraçado e, depois, chocante. Digo “chocante” no bom sentido porque com este filme podemos comprovar que ele é uma estrela por mérito próprio, pelas suas qualidades desde jovem. O papelão que ele desempenha neste filme é, em conjunto com o guião, o que faz deste filme uma obra-prima. Não sei qual dos dois contribui mais.
– Tenho que, decididamente, explorar melhor a filmografia de Richard Gere porque a minha opinião em relação a ele não estava neste patamar. Desempenha um grande papel neste filme, muito bom!
– No geral todos os actores estão bem, um filme sério “à antiga”.
– Normalmente não tenho muita paciência para os típicos “filmes de tribunais” mas este não nos cansa com muito tribunal. Apenas o essencial e com uma qualidade a nível de diálogos que me faz crer que, mesmo que essas cenas fossem mais longas, não iria ficar cansado de as ver.
– A história, a história… tenho que admitir que até tem uma base básica – passo a redundância -, que já se viu muita coisa do género em termos de enredo principal, mas deixo a questão: será que o filme gira em volta da história principal?
